What is a school mascot history?

A school mascot history is the record of how a school chose its mascot, colors and logo, how they changed over time and who wore the costume, often displayed in a gym lobby or near the student store. HistoryShowcase lets a school show each logo version on a timeline, credit costumed students in a portrait gallery and explain any mascot change in a profile.

Ask ten alumni, hear ten origin stories

Ask ten alumni how the school got its mascot and you may hear ten answers. Logos have been redrawn, the costume has been replaced more than once, and the colors came from a decision nobody wrote down. Some schools have changed their mascot entirely, and newer students may not know there was ever a different one.

A school mascot history display gathers the evidence in one place: early yearbook covers, jerseys, letter jackets, pep rally photos and each version of the logo, in the order it appeared. Where the mascot changed, it explains when and why in plain words. The students who wore the costume finally get their names on something.

School mascot history questions

How should we handle a mascot the school retired?

Tell it plainly. Note when the mascot was used, when it changed and the reasons given at the time, using the school’s own records. Choose images with care and keep the focus on the students and teams.

We don’t know where our mascot came from. What then?

Write what the earliest records show and say what is uncertain. Ask alumni and the local historical society for clues, and update the story when evidence turns up.

Can we include the students who wore the costume?

Yes. Give each one a profile in a portrait gallery with their class year and a photo, and ask them for a memory to go in the biography.

Is there a ready-made layout to start from?

Yes. Add the School History or Events & Traditions example pack to see a finished timeline and profiles, then replace the examples with your own mascot story.
