What is a school history timeline display?

A school history timeline display is a chronological exhibit of a school’s milestones, from its founding through the present, usually placed in a lobby, office or library. With HistoryShowcase, each event becomes a story with a year, a summary and up to 100 photos or scans, shown in a Timeline layout that visitors can filter by year or search.

Your history exists. It’s just out of order.

Most schools know their history in pieces. The founding year is carved on the cornerstone, a fiftieth anniversary booklet sits in the front office, and the rest lives with a retired teacher who remembers when the gym went up. New staff and students walk past that evidence every day without knowing which came first or why it mattered.

A school history timeline display puts those pieces in order. Each event gets a year, a short summary and the photos that show it happened, and visitors move from the first graduating class to last spring. When someone turns up a missing date or a better photo, you add it to the draft and publish once it’s checked.

What belongs on a school history timeline

  • The founding

The year the school opened, where classes first met, and who taught them, with any photo or document that survives.

  • Buildings and moves

Each new building, wing or move to a new site, dated, so visitors can see how the campus grew.

  • Name changes and consolidations

When schools merged, split or took a new name, and what the community called them before.

  • Firsts

The first graduating class, the first yearbook, the first student newspaper and the first state title, each on the year it happened.

  • Leaders by era

Principals and heads of school placed on the timeline, so each chapter has a face attached.

  • Moments the community lived through

A fire, a flood, a record snowfall, wartime years: the events alumni still bring up, told with photos from the time.

How to set up your history timeline

Keep one long timeline for the whole story, and give buildings and firsts their own collections so visitors can follow one thread at a time.

How do you set up a school history timeline display?

  1. Start from the School History example

Add the School History example pack to see a finished timeline, then replace its stories with your own events and dates.

  2. List the dates you’re sure of

Put known events in a spreadsheet, one row per event, and import it. Fill in stories and photos afterward.

  3. Check it with people who were there

Sit down with a longtime teacher or alumnus, look over the private draft on the touchscreen together, then publish.

Where should a school history timeline go?

  • Main office entranceVisitors wait there, and it’s the first stop for new families.
  • LibraryStudents researching the school can browse it next to the old yearbooks.
  • Your school websiteLink the published site from your About page so alumni can scroll through it at home.

School history timeline questions

What if we don’t know exact dates?

Use the year you are confident of and say so in the summary, for example “around 1931.” You can correct it later, and changes stay in the private draft until someone with publishing access publishes them.

Can each event include photos and documents?

Yes. Each event is a full story with a summary, a longer write-up and up to 100 photos or scanned files, such as a dedication program or a page from an early yearbook.

How do visitors jump to a decade?

The Timeline layout shows events in chronological order, and filtering by year lets visitors go straight to the years they care about. They can also search for a name or event.

Who can help write it?

Add colleagues by email as editors to gather material and write stories, and give publishing access only to the people who should approve what goes on the screen.
