Show how your campus became what it is. Each building, addition and named space gets its dates, its dedication program and photos from construction to today, including buildings that are gone.

## What is a school building history display?

A school building history display traces how a campus grew, covering each building, addition and named space with its opening date, dedication and photos from construction onward, usually near an original entrance or gym lobby. HistoryShowcase gives each building its own story, places groundbreakings and renovations on a timeline, and keeps buildings that were torn down in a collection of their own.

- Made for: principals, facilities directors and school historians
- Where schools put it: Near the oldest entrance, Gym lobby, Groundbreakings and ribbon cuttings
- Layouts: Profiles, Timeline, Portrait gallery, Photo gallery
- Visitors can filter by: Building, Year
- Cost: Free to use. No payment details required.

## Every building has layers nobody explains

Every school building has layers. The original front entrance is now a hallway, the old gym is the library, and a wing built in a hurry decades ago is getting renovated again. Alumni come back and can’t find their old classroom. Students walk through a gym named for someone whose story nobody has told them.

A school building history display shows how the campus became what it is. Each building, addition and named space gets a story with its dates, its dedication program, construction photos and the people involved. When a renovation starts or a building comes down, you add the new chapter while the old photos still exist.

## How does a school building history display compare with dedication plaques?

| What matters | Dedication plaques | HistoryShowcase |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What it records | A name and a date in bronze | Dates, programs, photos and the people involved |
| Renovations and additions | A new plaque, if anyone orders one | A new chapter added to the timeline |
| Buildings torn down | No marker once the building is gone | Kept in a collection of their own |
| Who a space honors | A name over the door | A profile telling that person’s story |
| Durability | Permanent and fixed to the wall | Shown on a screen, editable any time |

## What to include in a building history

- **The original buildings.** When each opened, what it held then and what it holds now.
- **Additions and renovations.** New wings, gyms, labs and auditoriums, each dated, with photos from before and after.
- **Named spaces and who they honor.** The person behind each named gym, field, library or hall, with a profile of their own.
- **Construction photos and blueprints.** Groundbreakings, steel going up and architect drawings, scanned from district files or alumni albums.
- **Dedication programs and cornerstones.** Programs from opening day and the words on each cornerstone or plaque.
- **Buildings that are gone.** Demolished schools, portables and old gyms, with the years they stood.

## How to set up a building history

One story per building, a timeline of change, and portraits for the people your spaces are named after.

## How do you put together a school building history display?

1. **Walk the campus with a list.** Note every building, wing, plaque and named room, then match each one to the documents and photos you have.
2. **Find the dedication programs.** Opening-day programs and newspaper clippings usually name the architect, the donors and who a building honors. Scan them.
3. **Add the current chapter.** Photograph each space as it is today, add those photos to its story, then preview and publish.

## Where should a building history display go?

- **Near the oldest entrance.** Where visitors can see the original brick for themselves.
- **Gym lobby.** Explain the name over the door to everyone who walks under it.
- **Groundbreakings and ribbon cuttings.** Open the display so guests see how the new building fits the old.

## School building history questions

### What should a building story include?

The year it opened, what it was built for, what it is used for now, who it is named for, and photos from construction through today. Add dedication programs and drawings as scans.

### How do we handle buildings that were torn down?

Keep them. Give each one a story with the years it stood and the best photos you can find, in a collection for buildings that are gone, so alumni can still find the building they remember.

### Can we show a renovation while it’s happening?

Yes. Add construction photos to the building’s story as work goes on and publish updates when you’re ready. Changes stay in the private draft until someone publishes.

### Where do we find old building photos?

Start with yearbooks, dedication programs, district facilities files and alumni albums. Your local historical society or library may also have street or aerial views.
