Heritage lives in family albums, recipe cards, festival programs and the stories elders tell. Gather them as stories on a touchscreen, so the community can see where it came from and keep adding as more families take part.

## What is a heritage display?

A heritage display presents the history and traditions of a community, ethnic group or region: where families came from, how they lived and what they still celebrate. With HistoryShowcase, a heritage center or community group turns family photos, documents and traditions into stories with years and summaries, organized in collections that visitors browse on a touchscreen.

- Made for: heritage center staff, cultural associations and community volunteers
- Where it goes: Heritage center gallery, Festivals and cultural events, Community hall
- Layouts: Profiles, Timeline, Photo gallery
- Visitors can filter by: Region, Year
- Cost: Free to use. No payment details required.

## Heritage is spread across the community’s kitchen drawers

A community’s heritage rarely sits in one place. One family has the passport and the photo from the ship, another has recipe cards in a grandmother’s handwriting, and the festival committee has thirty years of programs in a closet. The heritage center can show only what fits in its cabinets, and the rest stays scattered until it’s lost.

A heritage display lets the center gather copies without taking the originals. Families bring photos and documents to be scanned, keep their keepsakes, and see their story join the others on the touchscreen. Over time it becomes a record of the whole community, organized by family, tradition and place, that relatives can also open from home.

## How does a heritage display compare with display boards and cabinets?

| What matters | Display boards and cabinets | HistoryShowcase |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Objects | Real textiles, tools and keepsakes | Photos and scans of them, with their story |
| Families represented | The few who lent items for the case | Every family that shares a photo |
| The story behind an item | A small label card | A summary and a longer write-up |
| Changing the exhibit | Take down and rebuild the boards | Add or edit stories at any time |
| Visiting from far away | Only in person | The live site’s web address |

## Heritage display ideas

- **Arrival stories.** How and when families came, with passports, tickets, letters and the first photos taken here.
- **Family profiles.** One profile per family, with portraits across generations and where they settled.
- **Food and recipes.** Recipe cards photographed in the original handwriting, with the story of who made them and when.
- **Music, dance and festivals.** Photos and programs from celebrations by year, so families can find their own.
- **Gathering places.** The churches, halls, clubs and newspapers that held the community together, each dated and described.
- **Crafts and heirlooms.** Textiles, tools and keepsakes photographed with the family’s permission, while the objects stay at home.

## How to organize a heritage display

Families are the heart of it, so give them a collection of profiles, and let traditions and places cut across families.

Site: Our Heritage

- **Families** (Profiles): A profile per family, with photos and documents across generations.
- **Arrivals** (Timeline): When families came, in date order.
- **Traditions** (Photo gallery): Food, music, festivals and crafts, each as a story.
- **Places** (Photo gallery): Homesteads, halls and churches, captioned with the year.

Visitors can filter by: Region, Year.

## How do you set up a heritage display?

1. **Hold a scanning day.** Invite families to bring photos and papers to the center. Scan them while they wait and write down what they tell you.
2. **Make a story per family.** Start each family with a portrait and their arrival year, then add photos and write-ups as relatives send more.
3. **Let families check their story.** Show each family their story in Preview, exactly as visitors will see it, and keep it Private until they’re comfortable with what’s shown.

## Where should a heritage display go?

- **Heritage center gallery.** Next to the cabinets, so visitors can see far more than the cases hold.
- **Festivals and cultural events.** Families find their relatives on the screen and offer new photos on the spot.
- **Community hall.** Where the community already gathers for meals and meetings.

## Heritage display questions

### Will a tool built for schools fit a heritage center?

HistoryShowcase was designed for schools, and setup asks for a school name and colors. A heritage center or association uses its own name and colors and gets the same editor, layouts and touchscreen, with no museum-specific features.

### Do families have to give us their originals?

No. You only need a photo or scan. The keepsake goes home with the family, and the display shows the copy with their story.

### Can relatives far away see it?

Yes. The live site has its own web address, so you can share it with relatives in other cities or countries, who can browse from home.

### How do we handle private family details?

Keep a story marked Private while you confirm with the family what they want shown. It stays off the live site until you change that.
