Service hours usually end up as a number on a transcript and a cord at graduation. Show the projects behind the hours: the food drive, the park cleanup, the tutoring program a junior started.

## What is community service recognition for students?

Community service recognition for students is how a school honors volunteer work, usually with hours milestones, graduation cords, certificates and mentions at senior awards night or on a hallway bulletin board. HistoryShowcase lets advisors give each service project a touchscreen profile with the students involved, the partner organization and photos, and list milestone honorees by year.

- Made for: counselors, service-learning coordinators and club advisors
- Where schools put it: Counseling office, Cafeteria or commons, Partner organizations
- Layouts: Profiles, Honors ledger, Photo gallery
- Visitors can filter by: Cause, Year
- Cost: Free to use. No payment details required.

## A transcript line can’t show who was helped

Schools count service hours carefully: logs signed by supervisors, milestones at 100 or 250 hours, cords and certificates at senior awards. What gets lost is the work itself. Younger students never hear about the junior who organized a coat drive or the club that rebuilt a community garden, so they don’t see service as something they could lead.

A community service display tells those stories. Each project gets a profile with the students involved, the organization they served, what they did and photos from the day. Milestone honorees are listed by year, and partner organizations are recognized too. Freshmen looking for a way to get involved can browse by cause and see what classmates have already started.

## How does community service recognition for students compare with a bulletin board?

| What matters | Hallway bulletin board | HistoryShowcase |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What gets shown | Names and flyers for the month | Projects, partners and the students who led them |
| Keeping past years | Taken down for the next theme | Earlier projects stay in their collection |
| Freshmen looking for ideas | See this month’s board | Browse past projects by cause |
| Partner organizations | Mentioned on a flyer | Their own profile describing the partnership |
| Who updates it | Whoever staples up the board | Advisors as editors, with a publisher reviewing |

## What to show on a community service display

- **Student-led projects.** Drives, cleanups, tutoring programs and benefit concerts students started, with who led them, the year and what came of it.
- **Hours milestones.** Students who reached your school’s service milestones, listed by year so each class sees its honorees.
- **Partner organizations.** The food pantries, shelters, libraries and parks your students serve, each with a profile describing the partnership.
- **Service club history.** Each service club’s yearly projects, officers and photos, kept so the next group can build on them.
- **Senior service honors.** Graduates recognized at senior awards for service, with a short note about the work behind the honor.

## Organizing service recognition

Lead with projects so the work comes first, and let visitors filter by cause. The Honors ledger handles milestone lists.

- **Student projects** (Profiles): One story per project, with the students named in the subtitle.
- **Service milestones** (Honors ledger): Students in rows by milestone and year.
- **Community partners** (Profiles): Each organization, with what students do there.
- **Service days** (Photo gallery): Photos from schoolwide service days and club events.

Visitors can filter by: Cause, Year.

## How do you set up community service recognition for students?

1. **Pick projects worth telling.** Ask advisors and counselors for a handful of projects from the past year. Start with those rather than every hour logged.
2. **Import the milestone list.** Export students who reached each milestone to a spreadsheet, one row per student, and import it into the milestones collection.
3. **Celebrate at senior awards.** Publish before awards night so honorees and families can find their profiles, then add new projects as the year goes on.

## Where should student service recognition go?

- **Counseling office.** Where students ask how to find service opportunities.
- **Cafeteria or commons.** Every student passes it at lunch, including freshmen looking for a club.
- **Partner organizations.** Share the published address so partners can see the students who helped.

## Student service recognition questions

### Should we show students’ hours totals?

Showing milestones, such as reaching 100 hours, keeps the focus on recognition rather than ranking students against each other. Exact totals can stay in your service records.

### Do we need parent permission for student profiles?

Follow your school’s usual policy for student names and photos. Everything stays in a private draft until someone with publishing access publishes it, so you can wait for permission.

### Can we import our service tracking spreadsheet?

Yes. Import one row per student or project with named columns such as cause and milestone. Or upload a list and let Smart Add suggest entries for you to review.

### Can students write their own project stories?

Students can draft them for an advisor to add. Many advisors ask for a paragraph and two photos at the end of each project.
